What is the discovery call?

It offers us a chance to connect

Lulu offers a 15-minute initial phone chat at no charge. It is a safe way to ask questions and get to know each other a little bit. We can then book a  session. Sometimes referral to another service or offering would be more beneficial, and we can do that also.

Appointment length & details

Each standard session lasts 50 minutes. At the beginning of our work together, I typically recommend weekly sessions; as regular sessions has been shown to create a significant shift in presenting issues.  Occasionally, longer sessions are booked by agreement and we will plan for this. Out of hours and weekend appointments are available.

What happens in the first session?

What can I expect at the beginning?

The pathway forward

At our first session, we will get to know each other. You are provided with opportunity to talk about why you have come to counselling and I will ask you some general questions about yourself. During this time you can ask any questions you have about the counselling process and we can map out future appointments and a timeline.

As sessions continue and we review results the timeline changes to suit your needs and results.

Measure progress to decide

Medicare does not offer rebates for counselling. Contact your private health fund to confirm if mental health services are included in your plan. You don’t need a Doctor’s referral to see a Counsellor and you’re not limited to a fixed amount of sessions as a Mental Health Treatment plan requires.

Counselling - during and after sessions

Change discovery

Monitoring progress, changing strategies or reassessing goals is all part of counselling; work can be fast, or require more time for consideration.

Ways to continue positive progress may include:

  • starting a journal
  • creating self-care spaces in your day
  • pruning your inner critic talk-time – is anything she is saying valid/beneficial?
  • Using mindfulness to become conscious of negative thoughts and patterns and identifying unhelpful habits
  • Deliberately using positive language as a tool of change.
